Darrell Charles Carlson, 82, of Onalaska, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014 at the Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse, after a cardiac arrest. Darrell was born on May 25, 1931 in Viola, MN to Harry and Gertrude (Loppnow) Carlson. He was a Korean War veteran serving with the US Navy from 1949 to 1953 on board the USS Herbert J. Thomas. For his service he was awarded four Bronze Stars. He was a charter member of the VFW Cooties of Roseau, MN and has been a member of the American Legion since 1949. Following the war, he went into the family business with his dad, which became Carlsons Auto Electric in Holmen, WI. He owned and operated the business until his retirement in May of 1993, when his son, David, became the third generation to own the family business. On May 19, 1962 he was married to Linda Marie Hansen at Immanuel Lutheran Church in La Crosse. Together they built their house in Onalaska and made it a home for their three children, Susan, Carrie and David. Darrel was an avid walleye fisherman and was happy on any lake with a pole in his hand, but especially Lake of the Woods. He loved spending time with his fishing buddies, but most of all loved to fish with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Linda, his children Susan (Steven) Asp of La Crosse, Carrie (Kim) Goetz of New Lisbon, WI, and David (Lisa) Carlson of Holmen, his grandchildren, Brian (Heather) Asp of La Crosse, Kaylin Asp of Gilbert, AZ, Robert Vernon of Zalma, MO, Emma Carlson of New Lisbon, A1C Jonathan Carlson at Beale Air Force Base, CA, SPC Jacob Carlson (National Guard) of Winona, MN, Tyler Carlson and Timothy Carlson of Holmen, one sister, Marilyn (Vern) Cass of La Crescent, two sisters-in-law, Joan (Al) Lindvik of Holmen and Judy (Dave) Pralle of Onalaska, one aunt, Marcella Dorn of Lewiston, MN and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great-nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 1:00 PM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1500 Sand Lake Road, Holmen. Pastor Shaun Arndt will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in the Green Mound Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or Luther High School.
