Mary Sue Bateman, age 66, was called to the Lord on the evening of April 27, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mary was born March 18, 1948, at St. Anns Hospital in La Crosse, Wis., to Norbert Nub and Elizabeth (Burbach) Hansen. Mary is survived by her husband Sidney; son, Marc Bateman, Ramsey, Minn.; daughter, Dr. Beth McVey (Nate) Rochester, Minn.; and one grandson, Mason McVey. She is also survived by two sisters, Kathleen Cummings (Tony), Aitkin, Minn. and Patricia Jelinek (Michael), Fort Atkinson, Wis.; one brother, Robert Hansen (Sara), Mondovi, Wis.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mary attended Madonna High School in Mauston, Wis., and Laboratory Technical College, Minneapolis, Minn. Mary worked at the Rocky Mountain Osteopathic Hospital in Denver, Colo., Jackson Clinic, Madison, Wis., and Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff, Wis. Mary had also worked at J. C. Penney in La Crosse and worked for Hallmark Cards for over 20 years. Mary and Sid were married on October 9, 1976, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Mauston. Mary was a devout Catholic and belonged to St. Patricks Catholic Church, Onalaska. Mary loved nothing more than to spend time with her family, most of all with her favorite little guy, Mason, which whom she shared a very special bond with. Mary loved to read books and cross stitch. One of her favorite pastimes was spending time at Long Lake in the summer on an annual family trip. She also enjoyed the annual fall trips to Las Vegas with Sid and friends. Mary was loved by many and the outpouring of support from the Caring Bridge and Mama Batemans Brigade site was tremendous. The family expresses their gratitude to the medical staff at Gundersen Health Systems, Mayo Health Systems in La Crosse as well as Sparta, Wis. She received excellent treatment from all facilities. A special thank you to her close friends and family for their outstanding support and love. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Patricks Father Rossiter Fund or the Mary Bateman Cancer Fund. A Mass of Christian will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 2thndth, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Onalaska. Msgr. Steven Kachel will officiate. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services of Onalaska is assisting the family with arrangements.
