Daniel R. Schmaltz, 70, of La Crosse, died on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at the Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse. He was born on April 28, 1944 in La Crosse to Rufus and Marjorie (De Boer) Schmaltz. Dan graduated from West Salem High School in 1962 and shortly after graduating high school he obtained a job as a mechanic at G. Heilman Brewing Co. in La Crosse. He worked there for 36 years until the brewery closed and then worked as a union millwright for Local 1056 until his retirement in 2011.
On July 11, 1964 he married Marilyn Seidel in La Crosse and they later divorced. He married Lori Reinhart of Brownsville, MN on January 30, 1992. The Lord blessed these marriages with three children. Dan enjoyed attending his grandchildrens activities and fishing with them and friends. He loved baseball and racing. He also enjoyed volunteering at the Good Steward Resale Shop in La Crosse and was an active member at the Concordia. He and his wife Lori enjoyed traveling and wintering in Mission, TX.
In addition to his wife Lori, Danny is survived by his children, Lisa (David) Carlson of Holmen, Susan (Rich) Lusk of Coon Valley, and Chad (Brooke) Schmaltz of La Crosse, twelve grandchildren, Jonathan, Jacob, Tyler, Timothy, Justin, Autumn, Alannah, Darren, Aelynn, Willow, Malachi and Declan, two brothers, John (Dorothy) Schmaltz of La Crosse and Steven (Kerry) Schmaltz of Coon Valley, four sisters, Mary (Steven) Deyo of Sparta, Barb (Ed) Ryan of La Crosse, Jeanne (John) Henderson of Coon Valley, and Ruth (Leo) Leis of Bangor, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant brother Peter, and a nephew Mark Schmaltz.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 12th, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1201 Avon Street, La Crosse. Pastor David Leistekow will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity UCC Cemetery, La Crosse. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral & Cremation Services of La Crosse on Wednesday from 4:00 8:00 PM, and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of services. Memorials can be given to the Concordia.
