Roger R Fread

Roger R. Fread, 76, of La Crescent, Minn., passed away Sunday morning June 8, 2014 at Sauer Health Care in Winona, Minn., surrounded by his family. He was born in Manly, Iowa to Maurice H. and Mildred R. (Gallion) Fread on February 20, 1938. The family moved to Blooming Praire, Minn. in 1951 where Roger graduated from High School in 1956. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army for 2 years. On August 29, 1959, he married Harriet Haubenschild at St. Columbanus Catholic Church in Blooming Prairie. He first worked for a propane gas company and later spent 33 years in the Natural Gas business, retiring in June of 1994. He also served terms on the La Crescent Township Board, and was a member of various organizations. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, and fishing in his early years and later, watching the birds and deer as his health failed. Get togethers with his children and grandchildren were also very special for him. His quick wit and humor will be missed. Roger is survived by his wife, Harriet and sons Kevin (Dawn) Fread of La Crescent, Dale Fread of La Crosse, daughter Karen (Marti) Welch and Steven Fread of La Crescent. His grandchildren, Emalie Welch, Rebecca (Zach) Swedburg and Andrew Welch, Jared and Jorden Fread. One sister, Constance (Richard) Jelinek of Pequot Lakes, Minn. and one brother, Gary L. Fread of Milton, Ontario Canada. He was Preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Janet Ruth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the Church of the Crucifixion , La Crescent. The Rev. Gregory Havel will officiate. Burial will follow in the Crucifixion Catholic Cemetery, La Crescent. Family and friends may call at the church Thursday morning from 9 am until the time of Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be used in Rogers memory.
