She was born January 11, 1923, in Newark, Arkansas to Brevard Steele and Sarah Ellen (McAhron) Arnold. She graduated high school in Newark and completed some college and trade schooling .She worked primarily in the accounting field of various medium to large businesses. She retired early due to a lifelong disability from a very rare bone disease. Marty was an active member of her church and an avid student of the Bible. She enjoyed conducting educational Bible courses via mail around the world. Her faith saw her through lifes many trials. She was married to Eugene A. James on December 23, 1942, and had a daughter, Sarah LaNette Zimmerman of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and a son Ronnie L. (Lou Ann) Weldon of La Crosse. She dedicated her life to her family and was a very proud Mother Mom, Grandmother Gran, Great Grandmother Gran-Gran. She is survived by her two children, three granddaughters, a step granddaughter, three great-grandsons and six great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her two brothers, Robert Franklin and Martin Luther Arnold. She loved to paint (a hobby taken up when she was 85), read, cook, garden, and most of all travel; whether to Door county (a favorite), the national parks, our beautiful American cities or abroad. She was always up for a trip at the drop of a hat. She taught us to live our lives with a sense of dignity, honesty, pride and deep family love. She will be greatly missed. Thank you for the beautiful time you spent with us. The family expresses deep appreciation to the many caring professionals at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, Bethany Riverside Nursing Home and the Gundersen Renal Dialysis Unit for their exceptional service to Martha during her long years of treatment by all of them. In particular, a debt of eternal gratitude is owed to Dr. David Momont for his commitment to providing the highest level of medical care, for his devotion to Marthas best interests and for his steady guidance to the family. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Schumacher - Kish Funeral Home, 200 West Avenue South, La Crosse. Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM until the time of service.
