MaryEllen Meyer, 79 of West Salem, WI and formerly of La Crescent, MN passed away peacefully on Sunday July 6, 2014, her 58th wedding anniversary. MaryEllen was born on December 27, 1934 to Richard and Opal (Shockley) Strauman in Prairie du Chien, WI. She graduated from Saint Marys High School in Prairie du Chien and earned her RN degree from St. Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse.

MaryEllen married Donald Meyer on July 6, 1956 and they made their home in La Crescent for more than 55 years, moving to a senior apartment in West Salem in 2012 and most recently, Mulder Health Care Center in West Salem. She worked as a pediatric nurse at St. Francis Hospital for many years before staying home to raise her family. She later worked with the special needs program for the La Crescent School District. Family, friends and faith were very important to MaryEllen. She enjoyed traveling and visited all but three states. She was a member of Crucifixion Parish in La Crescent and was proud that all her children attended Crucifixion School. MaryEllen is survived by her husband Donald and her four children; Cindy (Dave) Sampson of Lino Lakes, MN, Larry (Teri) Meyer of La Crescent, MN, MaryBeth Meyer of Minneapolis, MN and Robert (Leann) Meyer of Dakota, MN; three grandchildren, Tim (Katelyn) Meyer of Mauston, WI, Jennifer Meyer of Mankato, MN and Matthew Meyer of Dakota, MN; two great-grandsons, Lander and Silvan Meyer of Mauston, WI; sister-in-laws, LaVonne Stafslien of West Salem and Kay Strauman of Sun Lakes, AZ; and her aunt, Rosella Scherlin of Prairie du Chien, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother-in-law, Florence Meyer; father-in-law, Floyd Meyer; brother Richard Strauman and brother-in-law, John Stafslien. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Noon Friday, July 11th at Crucifixion Catholic Church, 423 S. 2thndth Street, La Crescent with Rev. Gregory Havel officiating. Family and friends may call at the church on Friday from 11:00 AM until the time of services. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the La Crescent Food Shelf or Gundersen Health System Cancer Center.
